Hi Chris - all the actions so far have been peaceful, and keeping that track record would be great. Standing outside malls or giving security people a heads up is a good idea. There will probably be anti-marriage equality people turning up to the events; the best thing to do is politely ignore them, because they're just trying to waste our time and start a fight so that they can pretend they're the oppressed victims!

Don't forget, that if you're collecting signatures on private property, like at a mall, you need to have the property owner's permission to be there, otherwise they may ask/tell you to leave. At the very least, you should talk to the security people at your site to make sure they know why you are there and that you intend to be peaceful throughout your activities.

Let's make this peaceful and be as respectful of people who may not be on our side as we possible can. If someone is getting in your face or goading you, just ask them politely to move on. If you've already created a relationship with the security in the area you're collecting signatures, then you can refer anyone who's getting in your face to the security guards.

Hey everyone, Join the Impact is proposing an event called Take A Stand to protest DOMA nationwide on Jan. 10th, 2009. This is a really pivotal protest we need to organize quickly to get in on it. I haven't heard any news in SF about this being organized yet?? I don't live in SF city so I can't promise anything other than my attending for sure on that date. Please let me know if anything is being organized or if we need help, I can see what I can do! -Blythe

As a femme who recently got married with my Butch ( yep, lesbian ) legally in Montreal, Canada i just want to let you all know that i fully support your efforts to have your voices and hearts heard. I am shocked by the way LGBT's are mistreated in the USA ( not perfect here either but we can be married at least ).
Btw, i'm also a woman of transsexual experience and born with an intersex condition to boot.
I think it may be time for the type of civil disobedience that worked so well for African americans; go out there and use the bathroom of your choice, kiss your lover out in the open, insist on being allowed to get legally married under the law, demonstrate, stand up during political meets and speak up and yes you will be arrested, maybe even beaten but i fear this is the price to pay so that cis society's hearts and minds open up to us and understands that we are all part of one family in the end.

in solidarity,

In addition to all the other wonderful comments above. I keep thinking we need to go in to different neighborhoods besides castro. I know this is being done on some level. In San Francisco, the Mission, Bayview, Presidio, Sunset, etc. They need to see our faces and hear our voices. The more votes we can get the better. Even more so, we need to recruit leaders that reflect those populations. As a Latina, and part of a huge voting force, this voting force needs to be addressed and harnessed. Minorities (inclusive of all underrepresented groups) represent a small portion of people leading the movement, yet the vote is so large. Just some thoughts.
